A 1000 ft (305m) of HAI’s Proteus ROV neutrally buoyant tether weighs 14 lbs (6.35kg) while 1000 feet (305m) of our competitors neutrally buoyant weighs 104 lbs (47kg).

If your tether is so much lighter, how does it support so much weight?

A.

Our tether is a fiber optic cable wrapped in a woven Kevlar fiber jacket with an abrasive resistant polyurethane coating. Kevlar is the same material used in bullet proof vests for law enforcement officers. The Proteus ROV tether has a working strength of 200 lbs (91kg) and can support 1000 lbs (454kg). Our competitors typically claim a working strength of 100-200 lbs (45.4kg) and a breaking point of 700-1000 lbs (454kg).

How long do your batteries last?

A.

The Proteus500 ROV batteries will last 6-8 hours, and the Proteus1000 ROV batteries will last 6-8 hours. The major determinant of the battery’s run time is dependent on the length of time the thrusters are in operation and the ROV speed. Other ROV onboard systems use limited amounts of battery power.

Will your batteries develop a “memory” if recharged without being fully drained?

No, our batteries are NiMH, Nickel Metal Hydride batteries. They do not develop a memory.

How many times can I recharge your batteries?

A.

You can recharge our batteries 500 times before any performance change.

How long does it take to change over the batteries?

A.

Battery change takes less then 5 minutes.

How many batteries come with your ROV?

A.

Two sets of batteries come with each Proteus ROV. You receive a total of four (4) batteries as well as two chargers. This way you can always have a set of charged batteries.

What happens if you loose communication with the ROV?

A.

The Proteus Series ROV carries its power on board and can be programmed to surface on its own power after a time interval you set. You can also resurface the ROV using its tether.

What happens if the ROV’s tether is accidentally cut?

A.

As the power for the Proteus Series ROV is carried onboard, it can be programmed to resurface under its own power at a time interval of your choosing.

Does the Proteus Series ROV require any power on the shore or boat?

A.

No, You do not need any additional topside power as both the PC and “top box” are powered by battery.

Q.

Will I need a generator onboard my boat to run the Proteus Series ROV?

A.

Power is carried on board the ROV so no heavy marine batteries need to be used or drained from
your boat.

How do I know which ROV model and accessories I need?

A.

Your HAI sales professional can help you with that question. In general if you have an application
that will take you deeper than 500 ft (152m) or will use your ROV in a strong current a Proteus1000
will be your best choice. If the water is murky or you are on a recovery mission then sonar will be
extremely helpful.

Do I need any special equipment such as a davit (small crane), skid, winch, or boat modifications to launch the Proteus Series ROV from our boat?

A.

No special equipment of modifications to your craft is needed as the Proteus Series ROV products
are highly portable. The total system weight is easily manageable. One person can launch and retrieve the Proteus 500 ROV. It will likely require two people to launch the Proteus 1000e.
